ABELLA&FLOR:  THE BEE RESCUERS ON MALLORCA

Bees are dying worldwide. Right at the top of the list of contributing factors to the death of bees, is humans. Yet flower pollinators do an incredible job for our environment, as they provide biodiversity and ensure we have much of our food that comes from plants. Experienced beekeeper Jaume Pou lives on Mallorca - the largest of the Balearic Islands, that are part of Spain and located in the Mediterranean - and has made it his goal, with his company “Abella&Flor”, to protect the bees on his island. He has been tirelessly committed to teaching beekeepers and accompanying them with successful beekeeping practices, for the past 11 years. After all, it isn’t enough just to set up bee hives in your own backyard. It is more important to understand and learn the skills and techniques of a beekeeper. Here is where Jaume Pou, the bee whisperer’s input and commitment come into play. Since his grandfather was a beekeeper, he grew up being around bees. Today’s problems like monocultures, pesticides or environmental toxins, did not exist back then, when everyone on Mallorca had two hives in their own garden – enough to pollinate all the vegetation on the island.

The Institut Balear de l'Abella (IBA) is a project close to his heart. He founded this institute with Joaquín García and Alexandra Petzold. It ensures species-appropriate husbandry and successful beekeeping on the Balearic island. Its purpose: To spread beekeeping on Mallorca and to enable trained hobby beekeepers to turn their hobby into a profession, or at least to make beekeeping their second source of income.

Bee careful – LÄSSIG supports this project and takes over the sponsorship of beehives, which are looked after on Mallorca by trained beekeepers and regularly monitored according to strict ecological regulations. Today, we are highly dependent on honey bees and it is our responsibility to become active: For the love of bees and our environment!
